Acid Mothers Temple and its equally evocative offshoots are the brainchild of Japanese guitarist Kawabata Makoto. After starting out in various bands, in 1995 he founded Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., the name under which the band's first albums were released. Steeped in psychedelic rock and krautrock, Kawabata Makoto went on to form Acid Mothers Gong with Daevid Allen in 2004. The impressive discography of Acid Mothers Temple and its offshoots is especially noteworthy for its boundless, often disconcerting experimentation. Univers Zen or De Zéro à Zéro (2002), Terry Riley: In C (2002), Minstrel in the Galaxy (2004), Have You Seen the Other Side of the Sky (2006), Are We Experimental? (2009) and The Ripper at the Heaven's Gate of Dark (2011) can serve as landmarks in this abundant output. Acid Mothers Temple enjoy pastiching famous album titles from rock history.
