Born on July 10, 1987, in Maslandapur, West Bengal, India, Antara Mitra is best known as a Bollywood playback singer who came to prominence in 2005 when she was a contestant on the talent show Indian Idol 2. She began singing at the age of three and started performing in public when she was six. By the age of 18, she had abandoned her studies and pursued music as a career, appearing on several nationally televised talent shows. In 2005, Antara Mitra became a contestant on the second season of Indian Idol, India’s most popular talent show. Although she was eliminated shortly after she made the Top 5, she caught the attention of Bollywood music director Anu Malik, who offered her work as a playback singer. Antara Mitra then relocated to Mumbai, India where she began her career by singing “Loving You” for the 2007 film Speed). Since she was able to sing in multiple languages – including Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, and English – she became an in-demand playback singer. She’s recorded many songs during her career including “Kuke Kuke” (from 2009’s Life Partner), “Beshuba” (from 2011’s Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji), and “Ebar Jeno Onno Rokom Pulp” (from Indraadip Dasgupta). Antara Mitra came to national prominence in 2015 with the release of “Gerua”, a duet with Arijit Sing taken from the film Pritam. Further popular recordings include “Ding Dang” (from 2017’s Munna Michael), “Baby Jaan” (from 2018’s Bhaijaan Elo Re), “Mehrama” (from 2020 Love Aaj Kal), and “Raanjhana Ve,” a duet with Soham Naik, taken from the 2021 film of the same name.
