Danzal James Baker (October 10, 1996), aka Baker Boy, is an Indigenous Australian rapper and dancer known for combining English lyrics with Yolŋu Matha, a language native to Northeastern Australia. Born in the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, he was raised in the Arnhem Land communities of Milingimbi and Maningrida, and attended Brisbane’s Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts, where he joined the Djuki Mala dance troupe. After touring the country with the group, he made his debut as Baker Boy with the single “Cloud 9” featuring Kian in 2017. That same year, he also won the Triple J Unearthed National Indigenous Music Awards competition. 2018 found the rapper further raising his profile by opening for 50 Cent and releasing the gold-selling single “Mr. La Di Da Di,” which made it into Triple J’s Hottest 100 list. In 2019, he dropped the single “In Control” and made his acting debut on the bushranger film True History of the Kelly Gang. Preceded by the single “Better Days,” his first studio effort Gela saw the light in 2021.
