Traditionally divided between desert blues in the north and Mandingo music in the south, Mali has never been a fertile breeding ground for afrobeat. After various band experiences in the early 2000s, Ben Zabo became a sound engineer in Bamako's most important studio. There he worked with Ali Farka Touré, Vieux Farka Touré, Salif Keita and Tamikrest. His meeting in 2009 with Chris Eckman, guitarist with The Walkabouts, finally gave him the material means to produce his own album. The surprise is Ben Zabo, a perfect Afrobeat album released in May 2012
