Bernabé Marti – born Bernabé Martínez Remacha on November 14, 1928, in Villarroya de la Sierra, Aragon, Spain - was an operatic tenor married to legendary operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé from 1964 until her death in 2018. Before he started studying singing, Bernabé Marti was trained on the saxophone. He then studied singing at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome), and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana (Siena). Still performing under his birth name, he come to prominence in 1958 with his performance in Manuel de Falla's La vida breve, which was followed by Salome in Düsseldorf, Germany before touring Europe for the next two years. In 1960, he starred in the premiere of La cabeza del dragon by Ricard Lamote de Grignon. He began performing under his stage name of Bernabé Marti and performed in France, Germany, Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, and Caracas. He traveled to the US and made his Carnegie Hall debut in Il pirate. He also appeared in various other operas at high profile performances in Washington DC, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and major cities in Texas including Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Bernabé Marti met Montserrat Caballé and married her in August 1964. The couple performed together many times, releasing a series of recordings including Dúos de Amor (1964), Dúos de Zarzuela (1965), Great Opera Duets (1971), Madama Butterfly (1977), and Madama Butterfly – Brani Scelti (1982). His began to have issues with his voice in 1972 and eventually retired in 1985. His wife, Montserrat Caballé, died on October 6, 2018. Bernabé Marti died on March 18, 2022, at the age of 93.
