The symphonic metal band Beyond the Black formed in 2014 in Mannheim, Germany. Initially, the band was the solo project of vocalist Jennifer Haben, who had previously performed with the short-lived pop group Saphir. Working with an ensemble of producers and session musicians, Haben recorded Beyond the Black's debut album, Songs of Love and Death, which charted at Number 12 in Germany and Number 21 in Austria upon its release in 2015. In order to perform material from Songs of Love and Death in concert, Beyond the Black's lineup was expanded to include musicians like guitarist Nils Lesser, bassist Erwin Schmidt, and drummer Tobias Derer. These newly-minted bandmates appeared on the band's second album, 2016's Lost in Forever, which peaked at Number 4 in Germany, Number 21 in Austria, and Number 28 in Switzerland. Several months after its release, Beyond the Black's lineup was reshuffled once again, with lead guitarist Chris Hermsdörfer, rhythm guitarist Tobi Lodes, and drummer Kai Tschierschky emerging as Haben's permanent collaborators. This new version of Beyond the Black made its debut with Heart of the Hurricane, which climbed to Number 5 on the German charts in 2018. Another album, Hørizøns, followed in 2020 and reached Number 3, marking the band's highest chart peak to date. Three years later, the band returned with a self-titled record, Beyond the Black, which bested its predecessor by reaching Number 2.
