Adrian Quesada and Eric Burton formed the Grammy-nominated duo Black Pumas in 2018, drawing upon a mutual love of vintage soul, R&B, and psychedelic rock. Adrian Quesada had previously played guitar for the Latin funk band Grupo Fantasma, while Eric Burton was a former musical theater star with a strong voice. Banding together in Austin, TX, the two musicians developed their retro-leaning sound during a weekly residency at a local bar and released their self-titled debut in 2019. A Top 5 hit on the US Folk Albums chart, Black Pumas received critical acclaim in America and the UK. Meanwhile, "Colors" became a Number 1 hit on the Adult Alternative Songs chart, with the follow-up single "Fire" climbing to Number 3. The group were nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy in 2020. The following year, they were given a monumental profile boost by US President Joe Biden, who invited the group to perform—virtually, as it took place during the COVID-19 pandemic—at his pre-Inauguration event. In September 2021, Black Pumas were awarded Duo/Group of the Year at the 20th Annual Americana Honors & Awards and the following year, racked up another two Grammy nods, nominated twice in the Rock category. Produced by Black Pumas' Adrian Quesada, their second album, Chronicles of a Diamond, arrived in October 2023, propelled by the lead single "More Than a Love Song."
