Blankey Jet City

Blankey Jet City were a prominent Japanese rock band formed in Tokyo in 1987 during a fertile period for the national music industry. The trio, composed of lead vocalist and guitarist Kenichi Asai, bassist Toshiyuki Terui (aka "Bobby"), and drummer Tatsuya Nakamura, became a defining force in rock throughout the 1990s, signing to Toshiba-EMI after winning over the nation with an appearance on music television show Ikaten. Having initially made a name for themselves on Tokyo's live circuit, the three-piece released their debut single "不良少年のうた" ("Bad Boy Song") in 1991 and their first full-length LP, Red Guitar and the Truth—which made reference to U2's version of "All Along the Watchtower"—also surfaced that year. Their second album Bang! (1992) was also released as a live LP, capturing some of the infamous energy of their stage performances, and they went on to log a string of critically acclaimed albums during the 1990s, including Metal Moon (1993) and Love Flash Fever (1997). Blankey Jet City disbanded following the release of Harlem Jets in 2000.
