Number Girl is a Japanese rock group formed in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1995, formed by Shutoku Mukai (vocals and guitar), Hisako Tabuchi (guitar), Kentaro Nakao (bass) and Ahito Inazawa (drums). Their early musical style drew inspiration from various genres such as punk, alternative rock, post-punk, and noise rock, resulting in a unique and experimental sound. Their debut album, School Girl Bye Bye, emerged in 1997 followed by single “Drunken Hearted”, however it was their subsequent releases, "Tōmei Shōjo" (透明少女) (1999) and top 50 charting album School Girl Distortional Addict (1999) recorded under the Toshiba EMI label, that helped them establish their reputation as a rising force in the Japanese rock scene. In 2000, the band returned to the studio to record their third album Sappukei, followed by experimental-rock record Num-Heavymetallic (2001), shocking fans with news of their disbandment after a successful national tour, releasing live album Sapporo Omoide in My Head Jōtai (サッポロOmoide in My Head状態) after their final 2002 concert. After fifteen years of collaborating on their own musical projects, Number Girl reunited for the Rising Sun Rock Festival in 2019, performing their first original song in almost twenty years, “「排水管」 ("Drainpipe")” in 2021, however the reunion was short-lived, with the group once again calling it quits in December 2022 after playing their final concert at Pia Arena MM in Yokohama, releasing their fourth live album, NUMBER GIRL 無常の, in May the following year, which debuted at number 33, becoming the most successful charting album of their career.
