Chai is an indie-pop band from Nagoya, Japan, where bandmates Mana, Kana, and Yuna all attended the same high school. Not long after graduation, the girls met bass player Yuuki and formed Chai in 2012. Hottaraka Series, the group's debut EP, was released in 2015 and failed to chart, although the record's songs did enjoy popularity of digital platforms like Spotify. Pink, Chai's full-length debut, followed in 2017, reaching Number 41 on the Oricon Albums chart and Number 45 on Billboard's Japanese Hot Albums. The album was given an American release in 2018 courtesy of Burger Records, and Chai released a second LP, Punk, in 2019. Punk received critical praise but failed to measure up to the commercial successes of the album that came before it. Nonetheless, Chai signed an American deal with Sub Pop in 2020 and spent a year collaborating with various acts, including Gorillaz and Duran Duran. Wink followed in 2021, showcasing a newfound emphasis on hip-hop and R&B influences. The group earned a minor hit in 2022 with the single "Whole," then returned to the Japanese charts in 2023 with "ラブじゃん," which debuted at Number 23 on the Tokyo Hot 100 chart, seeing fourth studio album Chai drop in September that year.
