Originally founded by Tracy Marrow aka Ice-T and his friend Ernie Cunninghan, Body Count were a vehicle for Marrow's experimentation with heavy metal. The band's critically-acclaimed debut album 'Body Count' (1992) was mired in controversy due to the contentious lyrical content of the track 'Cop Killer'. The inevitable fall-out from the media frenzy which ensued once the track became public led Ice-T to withdraw the track from the album claiming the publicity had started to overshadow the music. Mixing rap with rock proved to be a canny move for Ice-T who gave the band equal stage time with his rap repertoire when he introduced them to audiences on their debut tour in 1991. The artist's audience appeal widened simultaneously across alternative music fans and middle-class teenagers and the result was increased record sales and sell-out concerts. The band have continued to record sporadically, with six albums across a 25-year period, and have proved they are still capable of courting controversy with hard-hitting lyrics and uncompromising subject matter. They released their seventh studio album, 'Carnivore', in March 2020, supporting its release with tour dates in Los Angeles, New York and across Europe.
