Dog Eat Dog was one of the first bands to mix hardcore punk music with rap. Formed in April 1990 in Bergen County, New Jersey, the group's initial lineup featured singer John Connor and bassist Dave Neabore, both of whom would go on to become the band's longest-running members. After adding a saxophonist to the band's roster, Dog Eat Dog debuted in 1994 with the single "No Fronts," which appeared on the full-length album All Boro Kings that same year. Although it didn't chart in America, All Boro Kings was a hit internationally, reaching the Top 40 in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland. Additionally, the single "No Fronts: The Remixes" — which featured an appearance from Run D.M.C.'s Jam-Master Jay — was a significant hit in the UK, where it peaked at number 9. All Boro Kings was followed in 1996 by Play Games, which featured a fuller song, an expanded horn section, and the UK hit "Isms." 1999's Amped marked the band's final release with Dog Eat Dog's original label, Roadrunner. "Expect the Unexpected" was a minor hit in the UK, where it reached number 94, and the group's members pursued different projects for several years before reconvening for Walk with Me in 2006. Another hiatus followed, broken by the release of an EP, Brand New Breed, in 2017. Free Radicals, Dog Eat Dog's first studio album in 17 years, was released in 2023, reaching number 62 in Germany.
