Of Native American origin, Buffy Sainte-Marie (b. 1941) has used her art to defend the Indian cause. A multi-disciplinary artist, she has introduced the general public to Canadian Indian culture. Her work, committed to a variety of causes and close to that of Joan Baez, is rich in beautiful folk moments: "Now That's the Buffalo's Gone" and "Cod'ine", the albums It's My Way(1964), Illuminations (1970) and She Used to Be a Ballerina, her foray into country the following year, are just a few examples. With a career spanning more than fifty years and devoted to many causes, Buffy Sainte-Marie spaced out her studio visits. She returned in 2008 for the album Running for the Drum and in 2015 for Power in the Blood. She was awarded the title of "International Artist of the Year" by France in 1993.
