The electropop band Cannons formed in 2013 in Los Angeles, California. Childhood friends Ryan Clapham and Paul Davis began performing together as teenagers, with Clapham playing guitar and Davis handling playing keyboards. Joined by singer Michelle Joy, the musicians began creating their own brand of dreamy, danceable, synth-driven indie pop in 2013, then officially debuted in 2014 with the self-released EP Up All Night. A full-length album, Night Drive, was released in 2017, followed one year later by another independent EP, In a Heartbeat. Cannons' second album, Shadows, arrived in 2019 and featured the song "Fire for You," which later appeared in an episode of the TV show Never Have I Ever. Its popularity boosted by its appearance on the show, "Fire for You" became a crossover hit on several charts, peaking at Number 2 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay, Number 1 on Alternative Airplay, Number 9 on Dance/Electronic Songs, and Number 9 on the Canadian Rock chart. The song also earned Cannons a record contact from Columbia, who released Cannons' third album, Fever Dream — featuring the Number 3 Alternative Airplay hit "Bad Dream" — in 2022.
