The multinational shoegaze band Cheatahs formed in 2009 in London, England. Born and raised on the outskirts of Edmonton, Canada, frontman Nathan Hewitt moved to the UK during his twenties to launch his music career, initially serving as the guitarist of the band Little Death. He formed Cheatahs as a side project, rounding out the group's lineup with American bassist Dean Reid, German drummer Marc Raue, and British guitarist James Wignall. Cheatahs' debut single, "Warrior," was released in 2009, followed by a pair of EPs — Coared and Sans — that were individually released in 2012 before being packaged together and reissued as 2013's Extended Plays. The full-length debut album Cheatahs arrived in 2014 and crystallized the band's shoegazing sound, blending dense layers of electric guitar into waves of melodic, howling noise. Cheatahs remained busy in the wake of the album's release, touring throughout Europe and the United States while also working on new material. The Sunne EP was released in early 2015, followed several months later by 紫 (Murasaki), whose songs were inspired by Japanese author Murasaki Shikibu's classic novel, The Tale of Genji. Before the year was up, Cheatahs also released a second album, Mythologies, which expanded the band's sound with keyboards and other atmospheric electronics.
