Che'Nelle

Australian Singer-songwriter, Cheryline Ernestine Lim (known as Che'Nelle) was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia on March 10, 1982. Moving to Perth, Western Australia when she was ten years old, she began singing in her father’s karaoke lounge, soon moving onto writing and producing her own music and uploading it onto social media platforms. In 2005 she was discovered by music industry veteran Sir Charles Dixon who introduced her to major label representatives, seeing her sign a six-album deal with Virgin Records by the end of the year. Several months later, Che'Nelle moved to New York to begin work on her debut record Things Happen for a Reason, which was released on September 25, 2007. Gaining traction by performing as the opening act for American rapper Kanye West and co-writing songs by prominent artists Carmit Bachar, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Leona Lewis, her second album Feel Good followed in 2009, with its title track earning her a significant following in Japan, prompting her to release popular cover album; platinum-certified Luv Songs, earning her a Japan Gold Disc Award for Top New Artist and Concept Album of the Year. Continuing to release albums in Japanese, she followed this with Believe (2012) and Aishiteru (アイシテル; I Love You) (2013), both charting at number 2. Her next Japanese albums Best Songs (2013), Luv Songs 2 (2014) and @chenelleworld (2015) also performed well in terms of sales and chart positions, earning her four Japan Gold Disc Awards including Western Artist and Album of the year. In 2015 Che'Nelle was invited to perform at touring ice show Fantasy on Ice, accompanying Olympic and world champion figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu with her song “Believe” in front of a delighted audience. Two years later, she released Metamorphosis, her first English language album in seven years, however the record achieved only minimal success, barely breaking into the top 100. Nevertheless, her 7th and 8th Japanese albums Destiny and 10th Anniversary ALL TIME BEST heralded her triumphant return in 2017 with the singer releasing a series of non-album and collaborative singles over the next three years, including “Invinsible” (2020) and “Bloom” (2021), followed by holiday duet "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" featuring Japanese singer-songwriter Emi Meyer, in December 2022.
