Circa Waves formed in Liverpool in 2013 and first drew attention for their effervescent indie-rock melodies on early singles like "Get Away/Good for Me" (2013), "So Long" and "Suck My Teeth" (2014) before dropping their debut album Young Chasers in 2015. The four-piece—comprising lead vocalist and guitarist Kieran Shudall, guitarist Joe Falconer, bassist Sam Rourke, and drummer Colin Jones—cracked the UK Top Ten with Young Chasers, largely thanks to the success of singles "T-Shirt Weather" and "Stuck in My Teeth." They went on to evolve their sound across subsequent albums Different Creatures (2017)—which charted at number 11 in the UK—and What's It Like Over There? (2019)—which went to number 10—to emerge as purveyors of heavier, brasher alt-rock. Two joint EPs, Happy (2020) and Sad (2020) preceded the arrival of the band's fourth album Sad Happy, which featured production by Kieran Shudall, mixing from Matt Wiggins and Dan Grech-Marguerat and gave the band their highest-charting album to date, going to number four in the UK. The band's fifth LP Never Going Under was released in 2023 and was propelled by much of the same scuzzy indie-rock as its predecessors, cracking the UK top 20 to reach number 15.
