The Japanese duo C&K was formed by bandmates Clievy and Keen in 2008, while both musicians were attending Bunkyo University in Koshigaya. C&K made its public debut later that year, when the duo appeared on Kusuo's hit single "1/6000000000 feat. C&K." The song reached Number 12 on the Oricon chart, and C&K scored a similar hit with the group's own release, the CK Island EP, later that year. Reaching Number 10 on Japan's indie chart, CK Island was followed by 2009's CKTV, another EP that showcased C&K's blend of reggae, 1980s-influenced pop, and funk. CK Style followed in 2010, reaching Number 52 on the Oricon chart and marking the group's final release as an independent act. After signing with Universal Music later that year, C&K released the single "Declaration of the End of the Rainy Season" and the album It's CK, the latter of which compiled the band's early material onto a single record. "Declaration of the End of the Rainy Season" reappeared in 2011 as part of CK A-YANKA!!!, the group's major-label debut album. One year later, "Japan Bread - Japan National Localization Plan" became the group's first Top 40 single, followed by four additional Top 40 hits — including "I'm in Love" and "Tangerine Heart" — in 2013. The group continued releasing albums, too, with 2015's CK Music featuring the Number 11 hit "Kimino Kotonba De." Two years later, "Y" became the group's first song to crack the Top 10, a feat that C&K accomplished once again with "That Day's Sweet Melody" in 2021. "That Day's Sweet Melody" appeared on the album CK Token, which was followed in 2022 by CK Oily.
