FAKY

Debuting in 2013 with a Disney-commissioned cover of the Pinnochio soundtrack theme “When You Wish Upon a Star”, Tokyo girl group FAKY first introduced themselves to the world as a quintet, although would undergo several lineup changes and even declare themselves “perfect as four” in one of their biggest hits before returning to a five-piece formation. With much of their early oeuvre alongside former members Diane and Tina including their 2014 debut EP, The One, now scrubbed from streaming services, the bilingual Japanese group have ostensibly rewritten their story to begin with their second EP, 2016’s Candy. As sweet as its title suggests, the Avex-signed project took inspiration from an eclectic mix of genres including club rap, dancehall-pop and moombahcore, all the while foregrounding the singers’ gleaming vocals. After joining forces with FEMM and Yup’in to create the supergroup Famm’in, who shared an eponymous collaborative EP in 2016, the band enjoyed a major breakthrough in 2017 with their third project, Unwrapped, which reached #75 in the national albums chart. Continuing to cement their reputation with high-profile musical contributions to the animes Gundam Build Fighters and Black Clover, the group returned in 2020 with RE:wrapped, which revisited seven of their best-loved cuts from their back catalogue, and a string of singles including the warmly received Novel Core collaboration “half-moon”. The group have since explored a new sound on their 2021 single “The Light”, drawing on myriad influences from disco and funk music.
