Despite being one of the most recognizable singer-songwriters in Latin America, Roberto Fidel Ernesto Sorokin Espasa (June 14, 1973), better known as Coti, reached massive success penning hits for established pop artists such as Diego Torres (“Color Esperanza”) and Julieta Venegas (“Andar Conmigo”). Born in Rosario, Sorokin took his first steps in music with the group Luz Mala, who recorded an album with Litto Nebbia, considered by many as the father of Argentine rock. During the 90s, he relocated to Buenos Aires, where he took his first steps as a producer for Javier Calamaro and Enanitos Verdes. In 2002, Sorokin made his debut as a solo artist with Coti, which spawned the radio hits “Antes que ver el sol” and the Andrés Calamaro duet “Nada fue un error”. The LP’s success boosted the singer’s popularity in both Latin America and Spain as he was chosen as opening act for Shakira at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid in 2003. A second full-length, Canciones para llevar, arrived in 2004 and opened the way for his commercial breakthrough with the live album Esta mañana y otros cuentos, released in 2005. Featuring appearances by Ismael Serrano, Julieta Venegas, and Paulina Rubio, it obtained platinum certification in Spain after selling 160,000 copies. That same year, Sorokin won Best Latin Artist at the Premio Ondas and the live rendition of “Nada fue error” topped the charts in the US, Latin America, and Europe. Follow-up albums Gatos y Palomas (2007) and Malditas Canciones (2009) solidified his reputation as a seasoned hitmaker, while Lo Dije Por Boca de Otro (2012) celebrated him as an author, gathering a handful of his songs other artists helped popularize. Sorokin delivered a sixth studio album entitled Qué Esperas in 2014 and two live albums: Tanta Magia (En Vivo En El Gran Rex) (2016) and Coti Sorokin y los Brillantes en el Teatro Colón (2018). Amidst the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, he performed the first drive-in concert in Latin America and dropped the EP Básicos shortly after.
