Darren Hayes

Darren Hayes (born on May 8, 1972 in Brisbane, Australia), is an Australian singer and songwriter. After a tumultuous upbringing, Hayes was inspired by a live performance by Michael Jackson which motivated him to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. In 1993, he met Daniel Jones and the pair formed pop duo Savage Garden, releasing thirteen singles including smash hits “I Want You” (1996), “Truly Madly Deeply” (1997) and “The Animal Song” (1999) with their two studio albums, Savage Garden (1997) and Affirmation (1999) selling over 23 million copies worldwide and earning the pair 14 ARIA awards. After the band broke up, Hayes released his debut solo album Spin in 2002 with lead single “Insatiable” reaching number 3 on the ARIA charts. The album performed well in Australia and the U.K, peaking at number 3 and 2 respectively. In 2004, Hayes departed from his radio-pop style, releasing electronic-inspired The Tension and the Spark, with “Pop!ular” reaching number 1 on the US Dance Charts. Experimenting with his sound further, Hayes independently released concept album This Delicate Thing We’ve Made in 2007, touted as a 25-track cinematic and theatrical album, which Hayes performed at The Royal Albert Hall in London. Returning to his pop-sound in 2011, Hayes signed with Universal Music to release Secret Codes and Battleships, releasing singles “Talk Talk Talk”, “Black Out the Sun” and “Bloodstained Heart” across Australia and the U.K, prior to an extended hiatus following the album’s 2012 tour. In January 2022 Hayes re-emerged with queer anthem “Let’s Try Being in Love” peaking at number 9, headlining the televised 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade and announcing his first major tour in ten years. On October 7, 2022 he released his fifth studio album Homosexual, a celebration of his sexuality which he feels was denied to him in earlier stages of his career. The album debuted at number 6 and 16 on the Australian Digital Albums and Australian Album chart respectively.
