With a BA in business from Southern University in Louisiana where he distinguished himself in his role as president of the Student Government Association, Lavell William Crump doesn't fit the stereotypical profile of a rap star. His ability to adopt a completely different persona when he performs is reflected in his choice of stage name - the character David Banner was the mild-mannered citizen in Marvel's 'Incredible Hulk' who could transform himself into a raging superhero. Although his debut album 'Them FirewaterBoyz, Vol 1' sold in meagre numbers, the album's single 'Like a Pimp' became a surprise radio hit which led to a deal with Universal Records. Banner's first major label release was the album 'Mississippi: The Album' which achieved some crossover success for the artist when a remake of 'Like a Pimp' featuring Texan rapper Lil' Flip broke into the Billboard Hot 100 and performed well in the rap and hip-hop charts. In tandem with his rap career Banner has built up a reputation as a producer both on his own compositions and also the work of other artists such as T.I. As well as his work in the music industry Banner has been developing an acting career and has made a number of TV and film appearances.
