The Japanese duo Def Tech consists of Shen (born Shenan Brown in China on May 9, 1981), and Micro (born Yuki Nishimiya on August 28, 1980 in Tokyo). The began working together in 2003, writing, arranging, and producing all of their material themselves. Their 2005 self-titled debut LP, released in an independent label, was an instant smash, topping the Japanese album chart and ringing up over two million sales and spinning off the hit single “My Way”. They would maintain their popularity with their next two albums, Lokahi Lani, which went to number 2 five months after their debut album, and 2006’s Catch the Wave, their second number 1 album. Over these album they established a genre that blended sounds from three different cultures and came to be known as Jawaiian Reggae. Creative differences led to them splitting in 2007, but they reunited in 2010 and their chart success continued unabated with the album Mind Shift going to number 4. They would attempt to reach a more international audience throughout the rest of the decade making both their new material (like 2011’s Up and 2015’s Howzit!?) and their initial LPs available online.
