Canadian multi-instrumentalist and singer Dan Bejar founded the Destroyer project in 1995. Born in Vancouver on October 4, 1972, he self-produced his first album, We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge, released in 1996, before surrounding himself with collaborators. For City of Daughters (1997), the musician enlisted the services of John Collins (bass, keyboards) and drummer Scott Morgan, turning Destroyer into a full-fledged band. Taking advantage of this fortunate collaboration, Bejar formed The New Pornographers with Collins the same year. It was with the album Thief (2000) that Destroyer really came to the attention of the media, who systematically referred to Bejar's cryptic lyrics and particular attraction to dandy rock and its exponents, David Bowie foremost among them. Subsequent albums Streethawk: A Seduction (2001), This Night (2002) and Your Blues (2004), all released on Merge Records, received positive reviews. In between numerous side projects (an album with the band Frog Eyes, contributions to The New Pornographers' records and tours, and a new band called Swan Lake), Dan Bejar released Destroyer's Rubies (2006) and Trouble in Dreams (2008). In 2011, Kaputt pays homage to the glam/new wave aesthetics of the 1980s, with a focus on the saxophone. Two years later, the Five Spanish Songs EP is recorded in collaboration with Sr. Chinarro singer Antonio Luque, followed by Destroyer's tenth production, Poison Season ( 2015), embellished with strings. The band follows an ever more elaborate and equally synthetic path on Ken (2017), Have We Met (2020) and Polaris Prize-nominated Labyrinthis (2022). Sophisticated Dan's Boogie follows in 2025.
