Formed in 2001 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Efek Rumah Kaca is a socially-conscious pop/rock band featuring frontman Cholil Mahmud, multi-instrumentalist Adrian Yunan Faisal, bassist Airil Nur Abadiansyah, and drummer Akbar Bagus Sudibyo. The group's self-titled debut album was released in 2007, with "Di Udara" and "Cinta Melulu" serving as the record's lead singles. Efek Rumah Kaca returned in 2008 with Kamar Gelap, a critically-acclaimed record that received a nomination from the Anugerah Musik Indonesia Awards for "Best Alternative Production Work." Kamar Gelap was also named "The Best Cutting Edge" by the MTV Indonesia Music Awards, and its handful of popular singles — including "Kenakalan Remaja di Era Informatika" — helped Efek Rumah Kaca maintain a presence on Indonesian radio. The group's members formed their own record label, Jangan Marah Records, in May 2010, then embarked upon a five-year hiatus. During that time, Cholil Mahmud and Akbar Bagus Sudibyo formed a side project called Pandai Besi and recorded an album, Daur Baur, in 2013. Efek Rumah Kaca then reunited in 2015 and released a comeback single, "Pasar Bisa Diciptakan," followed by the full-length album Sinestesia later that year. The record received a nomination for "Album of the Year" at the 2016 Indonesian Choice Awards. Later that summer, the band released a non-album single, "Merdeka," and then embarked upon another extended hiatus.
