The Japanese soul singer Emi Tawata decided to embark on a career in music after living in Vancouver as a student where she did some busking with a jazz band. After returning to Japan in 2006 she began writing material and performing in small venues around her home city of Okinawa. Later that year she won a prize in a regional talent competition which led to the release of her debut single 'Negai No Sora' which subsequently reached number one in the Okinawa Indie charts. During the next few years she released a series of mini-albums with varying degrees of commercial success until in 2012 she took a brief break from live performances and recording. She emerged a year later with a new record deal having signed to Sony Music Entertainment. Tawata's debut album for the label was a collection of six songs titled 'Sing You' which was released in 2012.
