Everything Is Recorded is the project of British producer Richard Russell, co-founder of the XL Recordings label. Born in the London suburb of Dollis Hill on March 18, 1971, Russell founded XL Recordings in 1989 with Tim Palmer and Nick Halkes, and became a talent scout for the label, alongside his work as a producer for Gil Scott-Heron, Bobby Womack, Damon Albarn, Ibeyi and Peter Gabriel. After his first single as a duo under the name Kicks Like a Mule, "The Bounder " (1992), he returned in 2017 under the name Everything Is Recorded with the EP Close But Not Quite, followed by the album Everything Is Recorded by Richard Russell (2018), featuring contributions from Damon Albarn, Sampha, Kamasi Washington, Ibeyi, Giggs, Owen Pallett and Peter Gabriel, among others. In 2020, he invited other personalities from the hip-hop scene for the album Friday Forever, before embarking on a series of recordings inspired by the changing seasons in an exclusively electronic style: Summer Solstice (2023), Autumn Equinox (2023), Winter Solstice (2024) and Spring Equinox (2024). In 2025, Sampha, Giggs and Kamasi Washington are surrounded by other names such as Noah Cyrus, Bill Callahan, Alabaster dePlume, Florence Welch, Maddy Prior, Yazz Ahmed, Jah Wobble, Jack Penate, Sam Morton, Mary in the Junkyard and Roses Gabor for sessions on the album Richard Russell Is Temporary.
