The British R&B girl group FLO was formed in London, England, in 2019 by vocalists Stella Quaresma, Jorja Douglas, and Renée Downer. Quaresma and Downer had met each other while studying at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and later invited Downer to join the project after watching her singing videos on social media. The group signed to Island Records in 2022 and released their MNEK-produced debut single "Cardboard Box" later that year, reaching Number 76 on the UK Singles Chart and Number 19 in New Zealand. In July of that year, FLO issued a second single titled "Immature," which saw the light a couple of days before the release of their debut EP, The Lead. Even though it didn't enter the UK charts, the extended play received rave reviews from the specialized press and helped FLO become the first group to win the Brit Rising Star award. "Summertime," The Lead's third promotional single, appeared in August and was followed by EP's re-issue in September and by the non-album single "Losing You" in December.
