Garbage

Blending the dark, atmospheric sounds of alternative rock with the pulsing production of electronic pop, Garbage enjoyed mainstream success throughout the mid-1990s and early 2000s. Formed in 1993, the band initially consisted of three American musicians and producers -- Butch Vig (famed for his work on Nirvana's Nevermind), Steve Marker, and Duke Erikson -- before expanding to include Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson. The band's self-titled debut album, Garbage, arrived in 1995 and went double-platinum in the US, thanks in part to hit singles like "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl." Garbage scored a Number 1 hit on Billboard's Modern Rock chart with "#1 Crush," which was released in 1997 on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, then returned in 1998 with Version 2.0. Like its predecessor, the album was a hit, with "Push It" and "I Think I'm Paranoid" both becoming Top 10 rock singles in America and the UK. Garbage recorded the theme tune for the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough in 1999 and released Beautiful Garbage two years later. 2005's Bleed Like Me, 2012's Not Your Kind of People, and 2016's Strange Little Birds all cracked the Top 20 in both the US and the UK, even though Garbage's streak of successful rock singles had dried up. No Gods No Masters followed in 2021, with the band promoting its release with arena tours alongside Blondie and Alanis Morissette.
