The Japanese pop duo Garnidelia was formed by Mai Mizuhashi (known by her stage name, MARiA) and Vocaloid producer Yoshinori Abe in 2010. Based in Tokyo, Japan, the two musicians kickstarted their collaboration by creating "Color," the theme song to the Japanese anime TV series Freezing. Released in 2010, "Color" was the first in a series of theme songs written by the band, including "ambiguous" (the opening theme to Kill la Kill, as well as a Top 20 single on Oricon chart), "grilletto" (the opening theme to The Irregular at Magic High School, as well as a Number 17 success on the Oricon chart), and "BLAZING" (the opening theme to Gundam Reconguista in G and a Number 11 hit on the Billboard Japan Singles chart). All three of those singles were released in 2014 before reappearing one year later as tracks on Garnidelia's debut album, Linkage Ring, which reached Number 11 in Japan. A second album, Violet Cry, followed in 2016, which peaked at Number 21 on the Oricon chart and Number 17 on Billboard Japan. 2018's G.R.N.D. peaked at Number 12 on both charts and featured four Top 40 singles: "Speed Star," "Désir," "Aikotoba," and "Error," all of which doubled as either opening or closing themes for various Japanese programs. Kishikaisei was released in 2020 and Duality Code followed closely behind in 2021, with both albums peaking at Number 24 on the Oricon Albums chart. A compilation, GARNiDELiA Cover Collection, followed in 2023, reaching Number 43 during its first week of release.
