Born in Paris on February 29, 1948, Gérard Darmon grew up in a family originally from Algeria. He spent his childhood in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, before discovering his artistic vocation at the age of 10, during a vacation in Brittany. After dropping out of high school before taking his baccalaureate, Gérard Darmon spent a few months in Israel, before taking drama classes in Paris. Rejected by the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique, he practiced in cafés alongside Jean-Pierre Bacri. Gradually spotted in film castings, he landed a supporting role in 1973's The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob. The 1970s marked the start of a career as a big-screen actor, punctuated by successful roles in Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva (1980), Tony Gatlif's Les Princes (1983) and Jean-Jacques Beineix's 37°2 le matin (1986). Gérard Darmon gradually became a popular icon, with acclaimed roles in La cité de la peur by Les Nuls (1994) and Alain Chabat's Asterix: Mission Cleopatra (2001). He then tried his hand at singing, notably in a duet with Alain Chabat for a carioca in La cité de la peur. Darmon, a Frank Sinatra fan, cultivated this interest and launched a musical career in 2003 with Au milieu de la nuit. The thirteen tracks, featuring contributions from Henri Salvador, Bénabar, Sanseverino and the Brazilian music of Orlando Morais, are in the tradition of French chanson, and are marked by the actor-singer's serious tone. Gérard Darmon followed this up with a new album, Dancing , released in 2006, an album of cover versions in which he tackled popular international figures such as Charles Aznavour, Dean Martin, Adriano Celentano and Frank Sinatra. For his third opus, On s'aime, released in 2008, Gérard Darmon enlisted the services of Marc Esposito and Marc Lavoine, and opened up to the new generation by offering featurings to Pauline and Amel Bent. Involved in French chanson despite an acting career that tends to take all the limelight, the Amonbofis performer appears at numerous charity events, including the Enfoirés concerts in support of Restos du cœur. While he continued to enjoy success in film and television, starring in Le cœur des hommes (2003), Vous êtes jeunes, vous êtes beaux (2018), Family Business (2019) and Burger Quiz (2018), among others, the actor's musical career began to slow down in the 2010s.
