God Dethroned are a Dutch extreme metal band formed in 1990 by guitarist and vocalist Henri Sattler. Known for their blend of death metal with black metal influences, the band quickly rose through the ranks of the underground metal scene with their aggressive sound, dark lyrical themes, and technical musicianship. Over their career, God Dethroned have explored themes of war, anti-religion, and human suffering, most notably in albums like The Grand Grimoire (1997) and Passiondale (2009), the latter packaged as a concept album about World War I. Despite undergoing lineup changes and several periods of hiatus, Henri Sattler has remained a constant driving force of God Dethroned, ensuring the band's peerless sound remains intact. The band's music is characterized by blast beats, intricate guitar work, and a raw yet melodic approach that sets them apart in the European metal scene. After a brief hiatus in 2011, the band reunited in 2014 and have since logged three albums: 2017's The World Ablaze—the third instalment in their WW1 trilogy, which also comprised 2010 offering Under the Sign of the Iron Cross—2020's Illuminati, and 2024's The Judas Paradox.
