GOT the Beat is a K-pop supergroup featuring members of three different platinum-selling acts, as well as International star BoA. Formed by the record label SM Entertainment in December 2021, the band's founding lineup consisted of seven female vocalists from the company's roster. Taeyeon and Hyoyeon had previously performed together in Girls' Generation, a wildly successful pop group that released 10 different Number 1 albums between 2007 and 2017. Seulgi and Wendy had previously performed in Red Velvet, the K-pop girl group with the most chart-topping releases on the Billboard World Albums chart. Completing the lineup were Karina and Winter, both from the group Aespa, and solo artist BoA, whose decades of success in the Japanese and South Korean markets had earned her the honorific nickname "Queen of Pop." Together, the members of GOT the Beat began rehearsing together in December 2021 in the group's hometown of Seoul, South Korea, focusing on a mix of dance-pop, hip hop, and R&B. Co-written by hitmaker Yoo Young-jin, the debut single "Step Back" introduced GOT the Beat's sound in January 2022. An international hit, "Step Back" debuted at Number 19 on New Zealand's RMNZ Hot Singles chart.
