Insooni

South Korean R&B singer Insooni was born Kim In-soon in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province on April 5, 1957. The daughter of a South Korean mother and African American father, she experienced discrimination while growing up, and used singing to deal with the difficulties she was facing. She began her professional career in music in 1978 as a member of girl group Hee Sisters. Insooni began pursuing a solo career in 1980 with the release of her debut album, Destiny. She released several more albums – The Person Who Has to Leave (1981) and Only Sadness Remains (1982) – before scoring a commercial hit with the album At Night, Every Night – Desire (1983). She followed that with several more popular albums including Beautiful Korea (1984), Letter of Tears (1985), Woman (1991), The Queen of Soul (1996), My Turn (2001), A to Z (2004), Goose’s Dream / Dreaming for Everyone (2007), Insooni (2009) Umbrella (2013), and Pinocchio (2015). Later in her career, she turned to other avenues including acting, appearing on TV programs including Hello Trot (2021), The Age of Destiny (2021), and Golden Girls (2023).
