John Butler was born in California before following his parents to Australia. He formed The John Butler Trio in 1998. The album Three (2001) made the band explode in Australia. Their acoustic blues rock evokes ecological and social themes. Sunrise Over Sea (2004) made The John Butler Trio the leading Australian band of the moment, and was also well received in France. Their success was further amplified with Grand National (2007), which saw the band begin to build a solid reputation in the USA. John Butler felt the need to evolve his band in 2009, so he changed accompanists. With the new line-up, The John Butler Trio released April Uprising in 2010. The merry band returns in July 2011 for Live at Red Rocks . It will be another three years before John Butler and his bandmates return for Fresh & Blood .
