A lyrical talent from Malta, where he was born in 1978, Joseph Calleja made his debut in Verdi's Macbeth, which he performed in Germany and in his American debut at the Seattle Opera. Winner of the Caruso Competition in Milan in 1998, he went on to appear on Europe's greatest stages in La Traviata, Les Puritains and La Bohême, and recorded two critically acclaimed recitals: Tenor Arias (2004) and The Golden Voice (2005). Her performance at the Salzburg Festival in I Capuleti e I Montecchi, published in 2009, was followed by the five-star recital The Maltese Tenor (2011) and a tribute to her childhood hero in Be My Love: A Tribute to Mario Lanza in 2012.
