Originally from Tennessee, Julien Baker is an American author, composer and musician, born in Germantown on September 29, 1995. She grew up in Bartlett, a suburb of Memphis, where her love of alternative rock led to a career as a musician. Inspired by the hardcore punk movement, in 2010 she formed the high-school band The Star Killers, renamed Forrister in 2015, then recorded her critically acclaimed folk/slowcore debut Sprained Ankle the same year, which led her to abandon her studies to devote herself to music. Signed by the Matador label, she fleshed out her style at Ardent Studios during the sessions for the album Turn Out the Lights (2017), featuring highly in year-end lists of critically acclaimed rock recordings. The following year, Julien Baker joins the Boygenius supergroup alongside Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. Back on her own, she produced her third album Little Oblivions (2021), embracing a broad alternative musical spectrum. After another Boygenius reunion for the album The Record and EP The Rest in 2023, the musician teamed up with Mackenzie Ruth Scott aka Torres to form a folk duo, at work on the single "Sugar in the Tank".
