Composed of UK acid jazz duo and Ninja Tune founders Coldcut, plus a wide array of South African studio musicians, Keleketla! is an experimental collective known for their exquisite blend of Afrobeat, hip-hop, and jazz. Invited by Keleketla! Library founders Rangoato Hlasane and Malose Malahlela as well as charity project In Place of War, the duo handpicked a couple of South African artists to record with, including rapper Yugen Blakrok, malombo jazz legend Sibusile Xaba, and vocalist Nono Nkoane. After the recording process at Soweto’s Trackside Studios, the pair headed back to London to finish the album with the help of legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, and spoken word legends The Watts Prophets. The final result, released under the name Keleketla! in 2020, spawned the single “Future Toyi Toyi,” a politically-charged number that featured hip-hop activists Soundz of the South, and peaked at Number 38 on the UK Independent Albums chart.
