A traditional Macedonian gypsy band, Kocani Orkestar indirectly owes its success to Emir Kuturica's film Time of the Gypsies (1989). The group was then discovered by the Belgian label Crammed Discs and the producers of the group Taraf de Haïdouks. In 1998, Kocani Orkestar released the highly acclaimed L'Orient Est Rouge. The group went on to perform all over Europe, followed by Gypsy Mambo in 1999. Unfortunately, Kocani Orkestar then ran into problems of internal rivalry, which led to the birth of two offshoots of the original group, King Naat Veliov & the Original Kocani Orkestar and Kocani Orkestar led by Ismail Salief. In 2008, the new line-up released The Ravished Bride.
