Formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2013, Lee Mvtthews is a drum and bass duo founded by British-born Lee Mavers and New Zealand native Graham Matthews. Both Lee and Matthews had relocated to Auckland where they attended the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand and met in 2012 when both were taking a DJ course at the school. Sharing similar musical interests, they both began collaborating on different school projects. Originally calling their musical project Joystix, they began releasing music online in 2013. The following year, they issued their first single, “I Got You,” under the name Lee Mvtthews in order to avoid confusion with Irish country singer Lee Matthews. They released their next single, “Back 2 Back,” in 2015, followed by their debut EP, Silhouettes, in 2017. Several singles followed in 2018 – including “Stay” featuring Omega Levine, “Inside Out” featuring Watson, “Fool,” and “Let Me Go” featuring Embher – before the Lee Mvtthews released their debut album, Bones, in 2019. The album was a success and earned the duo the Best Electronic Artist Award at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards. The album included the number 27 chart hit “Takeover” featuring NÜ, plus “If Only” and “In the Dark” featuring Abbey Christo. Between 2020 and 2023, they released more than a dozen singles including “Turning Back” (2020), “Don’t Say It” featuring Prins (2020), “Lights Out” (2021), “Thinkin’ About” featuring ShockOne (2021), “Dice” featuring Rachel Leo (2022), “Far Gone” featuring Degs (2023), and “Talk To Me” (2023). The duo returned in 2024 with the single “Kick the Doors Down” with Tiki Taane.
