Leeland

Alternative Christian rock band Leeland was formed in Baytown, Texas in 2004. The group was founded by singer/songwriter Leeland Mooring (born June 16, 1988), who had already achieved a respectable amount of success since writing his first song, “Shine,” when he was 11 years old. After several years of playing churches and entering talent contests, he formed the band Leeland in 2000 alongside his brother Jack Mooring, cousin Jake Holtz, and long-time friends Jeremiah Wood and Mike Smith. The band singed a deal with Essential Records, releasing their debut album, Sound of Melodies, in 2006. The album was a success, reaching number 14 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart and number 2 on the Heatseekers chart. The album earned the band a Grammy Award nomination and five GMA Dove Award nominations and caught the attention of Christian and secular music fans. However, the Leeland’s line-up was unstable and all original members – apart from Leeland Mooring – would end up leaving the band over the next several years. The group’s sophomore album, Opposite Way, was released in 2008 and hit number 4 on the Christian Albums chart. The album’s single “Count Me In” slid into the Contemporary Christian Radio chart at number 10. Love Is on the Move, their third album, was released in 2009 and contained the hit single “Follow You” (featuring Brandon Heath), which climbed to number 18 on the Hot Christian Songs chart. In 2011, Leeland released The Great Awakening, their fourth album, which landed at number 11. After more line-up changes and a change of record labels, the group returned in 2016 with the album Invisible, which hit number 5. Three years later, Leeland returned with the live album Better World. The album’s single, “Way Maker,” was their most successful yet, reaching number 3 on Billboard’s Christian Digital Song Sales chart and number 9 on the Hot Christian Songs chart. The band returned in 2022, releasing several singles from their upcoming album City of God (2023) including “Heart & Flesh,” “Still Mighty,” “Ark” and “You’re Not Done” which climbed to number 46 on the charts.
