Linda de Suza

Born on February 22, 1948 in Beringel, Portugal, Linda de Suza (née Teolinda Joaquina de Sousa Lança) began her career in France, where she arrived with her son at the age of 21. Settling in Paris in 1973, she worked in a variety of occupations, including chambermaid and café singer. Noticed by a producer and signed by the Carrère label, she scored an immediate hit in 1978 with her song "Le Portugais", with which the Portuguese community living in France identified. The No. 10 hit was followed by others sung in both languages, such as "Una Moça Chorava" (No. 3 in 1979), "Tiroli Tirola" (No. 3 in 1980), "Un enfant peut faire chanter le monde" (No. 12 in 1980) and "Chuvinha " (No. 10 in 1981). After fifteen nights at the Olympia in Paris in 1983, Linda de Suza was offered songs by Charles Aznavour and Jean Ferrat, and her autobiography La Valise en carton, which sold 2 million copies, led to a musical with Jean-Pierre Cassel in 1986 and a TV series two years later. The Portuguese singer continued to perform and record for various labels over the following years, before joining the nostalgic tour Âge tendre et tête de bois in 2016. After multiple compilations, including a complete album of her early years in 2015, the album Carte Postale du Portugal (2019), with Pedro Alves and Maria Pedro, was released. On December 28, 2022, at the age of 74, she died of respiratory failure due to Covid-19, at the hospital in Gisors (Eure).
