Maleek Berry (born Maleek Shoyebi on August 11, 1987) is a celebrated Afro-pop British music producer of Nigerian descent. Born and raised in South London, Berry started producing at the age of 14, experimenting with music software and learning how to write and arrange songs. By the time he graduated in computer science, he had already become a fully-fledged producer, making beats for artists such as WizKid, Davido, and Wande Coal. His talent behind the console didn’t go unnoticed, as he was nominated for Music Producer of the Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards in 2014. After releasing a string of moderately successful singles as a solo artist, Berry had his breakthrough in 2016 with “Kontrol,” an infectious Afro-pop number that went viral shortly after its release. That same year, he released Last Daze of Summer, his debut EP, which received rave reviews and solidified his status as a household name in the UK’s thriving Afro-pop scene. Following the release of the single “4 Me” and a guest appearance on Jidenna’s “Bambi Too” in 2017, Berry was nominated for both Best Male Act and Best African Act at the MOBO Awards. He followed up with the highly-anticipated First Daze of Winter EP in 2018, which was a lot darker in tone than its predecessor. The hits kept on coming in 2019, with “Flashy,” “Hey Mama,” and “Somebody Falling,” all accumulating millions of plays across streaming platforms.
