Mighty Sparrow is the undisputed king of calypso and soca. Born on the island of Grenada and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, Mighty Sparrow began his career in the 1950s and quickly ascended to the throne of calypso monarch in 1956 with his track " Jean and Dinah". Mighty Sparrow became a worldwide ambassador for Caribbean rhythms. He was also a major influence on Jamaican ska, being directly quoted by The Skatalites and The Heptones, and collaborating with Byron Lee & the Dragonnaires. His albums King of the World (1984) and A Touch of Class (1986) are good examples of his joyful, flamboyant style. Always attentive to current events, Mighty Sparrow released Barack de Magnificent in 2008 as a tribute to Barack Obama. With over seventy recordings to his credit, Mighty Sparrow has no shortage of material for indispensable compilations such as Humorous in 2001 and Sparromania! in 2012.
