The side project of Super Furry Animals front man Gruff Rhys and producer Boom Bip, Neon Neon conjure an eccentric mix of leftfield indie psychedelia, old skool hip hop and DIY electronica and feature a diverse number of collaborators and guests. Formed after Boom Bip toured with SFA in 2001, the pair recruited Carrie Le Bon, Fab Moretti (The Strokes), Spank Rock, Har Mar Superstar and Yo! Majesty to contribute to debut album Stainless Style (2009), based around the life of engineer and inventor John DeLorean and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Full of oddball melodies and retro 1980s synths, the concept for follow-up Praxis Makes Perfect (2013) was the story of left wing political activist Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, who was involved with underground communist groups and published avant garde literature that was banned under Italy's obscenity laws. Made in conjunction with a National Theatre of Wales stage production, it was a typically quirky and innovative project that reached Number 43 in the UK album charts.
