The J-pop girl group NGT48 was formed in 2005 in Niigata, Japan. With producer Yasushi Akimoto serving as the group's producer and mentor, NGT48 began performing locally in 2016. The group's original lineup also appeared in a live-action TV adaptation of the video game series Higurashi When They Cry, which aired that same year. NGT48's debut single, "Seishun Dokei," was released in April 2017 and became a Number 1 hit on both the Oricon Singles Chart and the Billboard Japan Hot 100, followed by the Number 5 hit "Sekai wa Doko Made Aozora na no ka?" that December. Both songs went platinum. With 2018's gold-selling "Haru wa Doko kara Kuru no ka?," NGT48 scored its second chart-topping hit on the Oricon Singles Chart and Billboard Japan Hot 100. "Sekai no Hito e" was released that same year and also went gold, but the group's progress was halted by the assault of original member Maho Yamaguchi by two male fans in December 2018. Following the attack and subsequent lawsuit, NGT48's lineup was significantly restructured, with the revised roster debuting in 2020 with the gold-certified Number 2 hit "Sherbet Pink." One year later, NGT48 scored the sixth Top 5 hit of the group's career with 2021's "Awesome."
