Revealed in 2007 with the album Neptune City, Nicole Atkins has never lost heart despite years of hard times, and has managed to keep her musical universe intact, which she calls "black pop", borrowing the timbres of the great folk singers to deliver highly personal lyrics. Bouncing between odd jobs and gigs in New York cafés, she finally tapped into influential ears during residencies in a café on Manhattan's Lower East Side. This highly acclaimed debut was followed by Mondo Amore in 2011 and Slow Phaser in 2014.
