Otep is first and foremost the entity led by singer Otep Shamaya, the other members of the group often being transient or recruited for a tour. Formed in Los Angeles (California) in 2000, Otep were invited by Sharon Osbourne, the formidable wife of Ozzy Osbourne, to take part in the Ozzfest festival, even though they had not yet recorded. This happened in 2002 with the acclaimed Sevas Tra. Otep's upward trajectory continued with House of Secrets (2004), The Ascension (2007), and Smash the Control Machine in 2009, each of which increased the band's fan base. 2011's Atavist seems to mark a step backwards in Otep's inspiration.
