PassCode is a Japanese idol group from the Osaka Prefecture. Formed in 2013, the band’s music falls into the category of “kawaii metal,” an eclectic mix of metalcore with EDM and J-Pop that juxtaposes clean vocals with harsher-sounding ones. Composed of vocalists Nao Minami, Kaede Takashima, Yuna Imada, and Hinako Ōgami, PassCode released their studio debut All Is Vanity via the indie label we-B studios. Though it failed to enter the Oricon charts, the album set the stage for their sophomore effort Virtual, which peaked at Number 43 in their native Japan. PassCode made the big leap into a major label with 2017’s Zenith, released through Universal Music Japan. The album produced two charting singles—“Miss Unlimited” and “Bite the Bullet”— and rapidly climbed to Number 20 on the Oricon charts. Following the release of the compilation Ex Libris Passcode in 2018, the group returned in 2019 with the album Clarity, whose lead single “Taking You Out” went to Number 12. Only a year later, they scored their first Number 1 hit with the single “Starry Sky,” included in their fifth full-length, Strive (2021).
