German tenor and conductor Peter Schreier was a renowned member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor and Berlin State Opera. He began his career in a 1957 Dresdner Staatsoper performance of Beethoven's 'Fidelio', landing his breakthrough roles in 1962 as Belmonte in Mozart's 'Die Entführung Aus Dem Serail' and Tamino in 'The Magic Flute'. A member of Berlin State Opera and a regular guest of Vienna State Opera, he became one of just a handful of German singers to perform internationally, most notably at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He has performed the roles of Belmonte and Tamino on multiple occasions, with other roles including Mime in Wagner's 'Siegfried', Don Ottavio in Mozart's 'Don Giovanni', Flamand in 'Capriccio' by Richard Strauss and the title role in Mozart's 'Idomeneo'. He retired from operatic singing in 2005 but continued singing lieder by Schubert and Schumann, a genre in which he had received much critical acclaim. He passed away on Christmas Day 2019.
